An elliptical machine is a great way to get a cardiovascular workout while not putting extra strain on your body. The pedals make an elliptical shape (hence the name) that mimics the motion of running. Because of this motion, your whole body weight is supported completely throughout the exercise. Running can put a great deal of extra stress on your body. When a runner’s foot hits the ground, it can transmit a shock force equal to twice their body weight to their knees, hips, and back. The elliptical provides the same workout while eliminating that extra force.

Elliptical machines come in a few different types. The Sole Fitness E35 is a cross trainer elliptical. This means that there are handlebars that move with the pedals and provide an upper body exercise in addition to the lower body and cardiovascular exercise.

This machine has a backlit LCD display that helps you keep track of your workout. In addition, there are pulse grips to monitor your heart rate. A heart monitor that straps to your chest also comes with the machine. The workout computer provides a couple different programs to organize your workout, including two heart rate programs. There is also a sound system included on the computer so you can listen to some tunes will working out.

The pedals and handgrips will all adjust so that they are comfortable for you to use. To provide a bit more challenge to your workout the resistance is variable, and the machine will incline.

Assembly, while straightforward, takes some time. The resistance wheel is the heaviest part, and will probably require more than one person to move and place. The overall weight of the machine is over 250 pounds, so it is going to stay wherever you put it. Make sure you have enough floor space for the full stride, and enough headroom as you will be several inches above the ground when using the machine. Also, keep in mind that the incline will add a few inches to the height needed. When assembling it yourself, try giving it a test run before putting all the plastic trim on. This will help you identify and squeaks or knocks that might arise from loose bolts. Using the lubricant that comes with the machine will also help reduce noise during use.

Overall it is a quiet, good machine. It is an expensive piece of equipment, but it is worth it in terms of quality. The added options and refinements add to the cost, but also add a level of comfort to the workout. The heart monitor also helps you keep track of your heart rate and how hard you are working.
